Can't stop automatic login even with boxes unchecked!

This is a new PC with XP media center and I have an MSN acct using the server
based mail service. I have tried unchecking the automatic login options from
the tools menus in both msn messenger, and in Outlook express which isn't
even set up as a mail client since I primarily use the msn mail server for
mail. I used to just hit the cancel log in button option by right clicking
the messenger toolbar icon as soon as it started flashing on my old 1k AMD
machine but this new Intel P4-D 3K is so bloody quick I can't do that. There
are times when I would rather not telegraph that I'm on the internet to some
of my contacts but can't seem to get messenger to not log in when I go on the
internet regardless of checking or unchecking the boxes.

To stop this behavior, close Outlook Express, then download and run the following .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

After this, Messenger will no longer load with OE.

on msn messenger you can set your status to Appear Offline and have it
remember this.

Jonathan, I appreciate your reply and I did load your .reg file but it
doesn't help me since as I posted I don't even use OE. Messenger loads as
soon as I log on to MSN for email or browsing. It doesn't load when I just
use IE since it doesn't load Passport for that protocol. The MSN issue is
linked to the Passport most likely.
If you have any other insights please respond otherwise thanks for your
efforts.

Since you are asking in the WINDOWS messenger group instead of the MSN
messenger group can we reply as if you are objecting to WINDOWS
messenger starting when you connect?

Are you running an antivirus product with Windows Messenger scanning
features? Some of those features will start Windows Messenger or inhibit
shutting Windows Messenger down.

You also don't say if you are browseing the web with Internet Explorer,
MSN Explorer or some other browser. MSN Explorer might be designed to,
err, direct you to other MSN services to enhance the associated
advertiseing revenue streams. Web based access to MSN Internet Access
email accounts works properly with the other browsers, although saving
email message content on your hard drive may require "save page"
functions or cut and paste to a word processor document. Until my recent
switch to a cable TV company's broadband servive I used MSN dialup for
years on this Windows XP computer without loading ANY of MSN's software.
I didn't use the last several versions of MSN software (since they came
up with MSN Explorer) on my Windows 98 system either.

Problem solved!
At least with regard to my situation. By opening the messenger window
without being logged on and selecting "appear offline" when logging on it
allows me the anonymity I was looking for and also allows me to respond if
someone I wish to contact comes online while remaining in stealth mode.
You were right about it being an MSN issue with regard to concurrent
operation of complementing programs. MSN messenger always logs on when MSN
starts regardless of checked or unchecked selection boxes. Thank you for
your responses and attempts to help even though it appears to be limited to
MSN and not Windows XP Messenger as the newsgroup is titled.
