When I press any key i'm told that the system cant start and to insert the
boot disk. Before I do this can anybody tell me if I do this am I going to
lose all the files I have in the My Documents folder?
1. Make sure that you did not inadvertently leave a 3.5 diskette in
the drive.
2. If you have a Windows XP Installation CD (not a "System Recovery"
disk or partition provided by the computer manufacturer) boot your
computer with this CD. On the "Welcome to setup" screen press R to
run the Windows XP Recovery Console.
Watch the screen during the Recovery Console startup process and make
note of the drive letter that is assigned to the CDROM drive. When it
has finished booting enter the following commands, replacing the ?
with the drive letter of the CDROM drive:
COPY ?:\i386\ntldr c:\
COPY ?:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
When the files are copied enter EXIT to quit recovery console and
reboot the computer.
3. If your computer has a System Recovery disk or partition for
Windows XP rather than a full installation CD you need to go to
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=310994 and download the boot
diskette images for your specific version of Windows XP. Create these
diskettes and boot the computer with them. When it stops at the A:\>
prompt enter the following commands:
C:
CD\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386
COPY ntldr c:\
COPY ntdetect.com c:\
Make sure you have removed the last diskette from computer and then
enter EXIT to quit Recovery Console and reboot the computer.
