can't sort in protected list even with option on

I've protected a simple list of data so that the last row in the list, which contains sum functions, is locked, and all other cells are available for editing

When protecting the worksheet I checked the "allow users to sort" checkbox, yet I get the standard "you can't modify this worksheet because it's protected" error message when I try to sort

What am I doing wrong

if the user should be able to sort you have to unlock the relevant
cells also
