can't shut down xp

Hi all,
After installing xp pro on my system the only way I can
shut now is to pull the plug from the wall! Not happy. Any
ideas whats going on here? Nothing in the bios or control
panel area has any effect. Pressing restart button does
just that,restarts. Pressing on/off button stops the
memory counter until pressed again. I need another drink!
