Can't setup network.

After hours of struggle, I remembered to ask the experts, so...
I can not setup a home network. Here are the facts:

Motorola cable modem connected to a D-link wired/wireless router.
• 2 computers connect to the internet with no problem.
• My computer is wired to the router, hers is wireless, with the recommended
D-link NIC.
• I run XP Pro, she runs XP Home.
• I have run the Network Setup Wizard dozens of times on both computer, but
still can not network the 2 computers.
• I tried the floppy NTSETUP disk as well as just doing it manually.
• I have run Wireless Network Setup on her computer.
• I tried “This computer connects to the Internet through another computer
on my network or through a residential gateway.†as well as “This computer
connects to the Internet directly or through a network hub. Other computers
on my network also connect to the Internet directly or through a hub.†Seems
to me my setup is more like the “network hub†option than the “residential
gateway†option.
• When I try to add a network place on either computer, clicking on
Browse>My Network places>Microsoft Windows Network, it will take a minute or
two to display MSHOME (the name of the network), but nothing appears under
MSHOME.
• I have turned off the firewall on both computers.
• I have tried letting the D-link NIC software manage the card, as well as
Windows.

I really am at wits end. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
Thank you very much for any help you can toss my way...

Oh gosh, do I feel STUPID!
I have virus and firewall software installed; I assumed the firewall portion
controlled Windows Firewall... but nooooo... As soon as I disabled my
separate software AND Windows Firewall, it worked!
Hours of struggle solved with a few clicks!
Sheesh!
Please see new post "Networking and Firewall"

That's the right option. The Wizard calls your router a "residential
gateway".
as well as “This computer
connects to the Internet directly or through a network hub. Other computers
on my network also connect to the Internet directly or through a hub.” Seems
to me my setup is more like the “network hub” option than the “residential
gateway” option.

That option doesn't apply to your setup, and it will disable file and
printer sharing. It's for a setup where all the computers connect
directly to a cable modem (through a hub), with no router present.

Browse>My Network places>Microsoft Windows Network, it will take a minute or

If there are any firewall programs (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm,
PC-cillin, etc) installed, configure them to allow access by other
computers on the local area network. Note that some antivirus
programs, such as Norton Antivirus 2005, have firewall features built
in.

Try accessing the other computer directly, without using My Network
Places, by typing the other computer's name in the Start | Run box in
this format:

\\computer

Thanks Steve...
I did get it working just fine, but have made a copy of your reply as I am
sure it will come in very handy in the future.
