Hi.

I have a problem with a Windows XP Home SP1a installed machine that won't
send .zip, .jpg, .bmp etc files as attachments to e-mails. .txt, .doc, .xls
files will attach and send fine. Problem occurs whether trying to send
files as attachments in OE 6 (fully patched with latest MS Updates), or when
logged to free Hotmail, or Yahoo accounts.

Configuration is:

Windows XP Home SP1a Upgrade (Installed as a clean install)
IE6/OE6
AV software is "Avast" antivirus
Firewall is "Zone Alarm" free version.

I have tried uninstalling Zone alarm and Avast, but problem persists.

Is there a security setting within XP Home that prevents certain types of
files being *sent* as attachments. The only references I can find by
"Googling" is to not being able to receive certain types of attachments.

Thank you in anticipation of any help.

Sounds like you're not properly attaching the files. Try using a free e-mail
site like excite.com, and when sending the e-mails just hit the "Attach File"
button to browse to where on your computer you have the files saved which
you'd like to attach. Make sure that what you're attaching is actually .jpg,
..zip, whatnot, type files. XP, etc., has a nasty habit of hiding the file
extensions from view.

Thank you for your input,

However that does not seem to work.

When sending .bmp, .jpg etc (and yes, I have checked that they are what they
say they are, ie, not multiple extensions on one file), after about a
minute, a message appears that the "SMTP Server has timed out".

This does not happen if I attach .doc, .txt files however. That is, those
types of files are sent correctly as attachments.

Thank you

How big are these graphics files you're trying to send? Sounds like
they are huge, and your ISP just can't handle them. Perhaps if you
changed to a broadband connection you might have better luck.

Hi Donald,

Thank you for your input. The graphics files I have tried to send for test
purposes are in the region of 25 - 50kB. I can attach a 100kB word document
and successfully send it, but, if I compress it with Winzip and try to
attach the .zip file it won't send.

Thank you

Col.
