This error concerns your Anti Virus which is scanning incoming and outgoing emails.

The safest way to fix this is for you to uninstall your AV and then re-install it without the email integration (scanning)
You are still protected after with the resident AV and this extra scanning option is redundant.

Since I do not know your Anti virus as far as which one that is why I posted the above way to fix this issue. Some AV is capable of shutting down the scanning by using the Disable the scanning control but some this disabling will have no effect unless it is uninstalled and then re-installed with out the scanning feature.

Good Luck and let us know how you managed

Peter,

I have Norton that came with this computer I got yesterday.

I did try to turn off the email & messaging part in settings and did a test
and
got the same error.

So you suggest I uninstall the whole Norton's and then re-install ?
I guess I am confused how to re-install it without the email part.

Sorry for being so out of touch with this.

Also do you think it would be better to
use Windows Live Mail rather than Windows mail or
does it matter. Windows mail came with this computer
but my brother in law feels Windows Live Mail will
not have this problem.

Thanks again,

Harvey

They can both have this problem now that you told me that you have Norton. With Norton it is best to get rid of it and install something else like AVG,Avast,Nod32 since they do the job better and with less bloating than Norton.
Besides that Norton is not compatible with Windows Mail or any other email client and this also applies to MacAfee and Trend.

So the best advice that I can give you is to remove Norton completely using their uninstall tool which is below in the link that I attached as a URL.

I recommend Avast and or Nod 32 and install it without setting the email scanning option in the setup or preference.

The error that you are getting is from the email scanning of Norton among many other errors that this particular AV can generate

Although it is possible that your antivirus is causing this
problem, it is more likely that your employer's firewall stops
all SMTP traffic. If that is the case, your only workaround is
to use webmail for sending (via your browser).
