Can't send e-mail with Windos Mail

I have used this connection with sympatico.ca for many years, and never had
problem sending e-mails until about two weeks ago, for no apparent reason I
first got a message when I was closing Windows Mail that I had mail in the
out box and did I want to send it now, I answered yes. After a few days I
noticed the e-mails were accumulating in the out box and realized they were
not going out at all.

I transfered all those out going e-mails to a new directory, but I was not
able to move the oldest e-mail, I can't delete it either. When I try to
delete it I get an error message that says something like "An unknown error
has occured" and there is a link to the Microsoft Comminities, but nothing
specific to this particular error message. This e-mail was originally created
through PhotoShop element software, I was sening about half a dozen pictures.
That e-mail did go through but for some reason it still shows in my out box
but stripped of its content it shows a message saying the content of this
message could be displayed.

I use McAfee anti virus software and it is running its updates every two
days as per my instructions.

I have been using my present computer software with no problem for the last
4 months.

The McAfee software is likely to be the cause of the problems, even though
such problems often take months to show up. Most versions of the McAfee
and antivirus programs, and a recent version of the Trend antivirus
software,
cause various problems in Windows Mail.

If you want to stop it from creating new problems, you need to uninstall it,
not just disable it. You often then need to run this cleanup program to
take
care of what the uninstall left behind:

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1>

You may even need to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and create the account again.

To take care of the undeletable message, download and install this hotfix,
with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or
the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first.

If this fixes your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems. I recommend either
avast! or AVG, either one with a custom install that tells it to leave
out the part that scans email.

This is probably the fix for the immediate symptom:
Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090
It also works on other folders.

But the problem is probably caused by McAfee.
Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.
