I have had this problem for quit some time. My network is 2 pc and a lap top (wirless) . All get internet connection, but for some reason they can't see each other in work groups. When i click >> View workgroup computers it sits and thinks for a acouple of seconds then tells me none where found. I ran the XP wizard on all the computers. Does anyone have any ideas what can be causing this problem. Please contact me directly at (e-mail address removed) thx for your time

I'm sorry I don't have the answer but as I have exactly the same problem and have tried just about everything I'm very disillusionsed with Microsoft. It can't be this hard to network 2-3 computers in your own home.

Dimitri,

Asked here, answered here. For everybody's benefit.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the
command window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into
your next post.

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and
Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection -
Properties), on both computers? Do you have shares setup on both?

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection -
Properties - TCP/IP - Properties - Advanced - WINS) on both computers?

Make sure the browser service is running on each computer. Control
Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer
Browser service is started.

Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF or third party)?
If so, you need to configure them for file sharing, by opening ports
TCP 139, 445 and UDP 137, 138, 445, and / or by identifying the other
computers as present in the Local (Trusted) zone. Firewall
configurations are a very common cause of (network) browser, and file
sharing, problems.

Cheers,
Chuck

Thanks for the tips. The Computer Browser one seemed to
improve things somewhat.

I think I've now narrowed my problems down to one PC (the
former ICS gateway)

As a start, my config from the offending XP Pro PC is
below. (There appears no problems between the XP Pro
laptop and other XP Pro PC presently)

Other info:
Client for Microsoft Networks,: YES
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks :YES
Shares setup on both: YES (1 folder and 1 printer only)
NetBIOS Over TCP/IP: YES
browser service is running on each computer:YES Control
Browser service is started:YES (turning this on for all this helped somewhat)
software firewall:NO - although this machine was a
former ICS gateway

Persistent issues:
- CAN ping all LAN computers OK
- CAN see all names in the workgroup OK from all PCs now
- CAN'T access shared folders of problem PC from ANY
computer due to "No more connections can be made to this
remote comptuer . . ."
- NO sessions open however
- SIMPLE File Sharing used (turned off and one several
times)

I've pretty much run out of ideas.

PS: I can see how networking can send you paranoid. If
its this hard in WinXP then theres no way I'd tackle
Linux.

Dimitri,

Ipconfig data is much more useful if there is more than one provided -
preferably one from a working computer - for comparison.

I see you're running IPV6 on Mark. Are you running it on any other working
computer?

How about pinging Mark - does that work from the other computers? By name and
by ip address please.

No firewalls at all?

If you're going to use Simple File Sharing, make sure the Guest account is
enabled on each computer, with identical, non-blank password on each.

Cheers,
Chuck

Wait - I have success! Yee-haa.

The key change was to remove Éveryone' from the
authorised users list on the 'Log on Locally' setting of
Admin Tools-Local Security Policy. Everything now
working as expected.

I'll post a note here later about all the things I
changed to help others with this predicament.

I did come to the conclusion that the error message "No
more connections can be made to this computer . .. "is
basically a 'catchall' error code for anything vaguely
network or security related.

Thanks Chuck and others
