Can't See New HD After Cloning with Ghost 2003

N

Nehmo Sergheyev

I'm trying to install a Western Digital 80 GB, WD 800JB, as the boot
drive in a Windows XP Home (SP1) machine.

The first phase of this operation is to clone the original drive to the
new drive while the new is a slave.

I physically installed the new drive as slave and left the original as
master. I ran Ghost 2003. (I previously had unsuccessful experience with
software from other drive manufacturers - not WD -, but successful with
Ghost 2003). I used Ghost Advanced > Clone, and things went as
expected. It shuts down, restarts, and copies while in DOS. I didn't sit
to watch the operation. When I came back to the machine, Ghost 2003 said
it had completed the job with errors, and that I should run Image
Integrity, part of Ghost 2003. But the new drive doesn't show up, so how
can I open it for Image Integrity? It doesn't show up in My Computer
either.

In Disk Management the new HD doesn't show up the top section of the
right side of the window, but it does show up in the bottom section of
the right side. The bar representing the space on the drive is black
(instead of blue) meaning unallocated.

Should I try to clone again? This "with errors" thing didn't happen last
time I did this.

Hi..
If the clone process copy's the id tag then the 2k/xp box cant cope
(normally you get errors on starting windows)..

I would reboot and run the ghost.exe file off of the floppy using the -fdsz
option
"ghost.exe -fdsz"

"that's my guess"

You should be able to check the Ghost log and see
exactly what happened during the attempt to clone.
Should I try to clone again?

Not until you resolve what the errors are about.
This "with errors" thing didn't happen last time I did this.

Could be you dont have the drives jumpered properly,
particularly when you mention WD. WD drives have a
different jumper config for master with a slave and master
as the only drive on the cable if you arent using cable select.

Or you could have damaged the ribbon cable in the
process of installing the new drive, or just not have
the cable seated properly at each connector etc.

AND its absolutely crucial to not let XP boot with both
drives visible on the first boot after the clone has been
made. It can get seriously confused in that situation.
Just do the clone from the ghost floppy or after booting
the ghost CD so it doesnt auto reboot into XP when its
done. Then just physically unplug the original and boot
off the new drive. After XP has reported that its seen
new hardware, and you have let it reboot, you can
then plug the original drive back in again and wipe it etc.

I have the WD drive as slave, a 10 pin jumper area with #3&#4 jumped
(the second pair from the left) as indicated on the WD diagram.

I used the old ribbon. I have the new one to replace it.

- Nehmo -
It must have auto rebooted. But I think something went wrong during the
cloning.

Here's the log. Whatdaya think? BTW, hi Ron.

Usual cryptic Ghost message.
The only thing I could find on that particular error message was
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]
Try that. Doubt if its got anything to do with the cable with that
error message.
Apparently, defragging to clear up more space helps.

Apparently, defragging to open up more space helps.

I ran the first part of Disk Cleanup, which tells you what you have to
clean up and provides a box with a couple of tabs. More Options tab >
System Restore section, Disk Clean up. button, which removes old restore
points. I also deleted a big iso file I had, and then defragmented. I
ran Ghost 2003 and cloned again. This time it worked. The new drive has
everything the old one had.

I notice with WD the jumper settings are different with the Single and
the Dual (master). The single has no jumper. The Dual (Master) is jumper
on #5&#6, the middle.

Seagate and Maxtor both had the same jumper settings for these two
configurations.

I'm going to just use the Single setting. I'll also change the drive's
position on the ATA cable from the middle to the end. (Incidentally,
the WD literature calls the ATA ribbon an "EIDE" cable.)

But I'm curious: If I *were* going to use both drives, with the new one
as the boot, would I use the Dual (master) jumper setting on the new
drive and start out with only that drive attached? If that would work,
then Dual (master) and Single settings both work for a single drive. So
what's the purpose of having two settings?

I'm trying to install a Western Digital 80 GB, WD 800JB, as the boot
drive in a Windows XP Home (SP1) machine.

The first phase of this operation is to clone the original drive to the
new drive while the new is a slave.

Use a boot diskette with Ghost and copy the drive that way. Once the
Ghosting is done, shut down and swap the drives. Do *NOT* start the machine
up until after you have disconnected the old drive and set the new one as
Master.

Personally, I prefer to use the second IDE connector and keep both drives
set to Master. Then you just move the cable when your done without worrying
about jumpers.

It works. I'm keeping the old drive out. That policy saved me last time.
I ended up accidentally spilling tea on the old computer, which at the
time had its cover off. The liquid destroyed _all_ the drives in the
machine. But I still had an old one sitting on a shelf (this was the
original one in our former thread.), and it had most everything on it.

Is there any way to actually measure how fast data is being retrieved?

I just finished, and the new drive is working as a lone drive. I don't
need the old 15 GB one, and keeping it out preserves it as a backup.

I simply used Ghost 2003 from where it lives. What would be (or have
been) the advantage of running it from a diskette? I assume by
"diskette" you mean a floppy disk.

Explain what you mean by "move the cable"? If the two drives are on
different IDE Ribbons, and the clone is complete, then, if you don't
change the jumpers, what do you do to make the new HD the bootable one?.

Yeah, real gotcha with WD drives, mainly because
they are the only current manufacturer with that
different jumper config for those two situations.
Seagate and Maxtor both had the same
jumper settings for these two configurations.

Yep, so do the others like Samsung too.
I'm going to just use the Single setting. I'll also change the
drive's position on the ATA cable from the middle to the end.

Yeah, its best to have it on the end when its the only drive.
(Incidentally, the WD literature calls the ATA ribbon an "EIDE" cable.)

Yeah, because they invented that EIDE term and have been
determined to hang onto it like grim death. Strange company.

They are the last to have fluid bearing drives too.

And the last to have a SMART temperature sensor.
But I'm curious: If I *were* going to use both drives, with the new
one as the boot, would I use the Dual (master) jumper setting on
the new drive and start out with only that drive attached?

That usually wont let the bios see the drive. Thats the big
disadvantage with the WD jumper config, you have to change
it when going between single and dual drives on the ribbon cable.

Corse you can use cable select instead and then you dont need
to. You do need a cable select cable tho. Most new ones are.
If that would work, then Dual (master) and
Single settings both work for a single drive.

Often it doesnt. Sometimes it does, depends on the bios and chipset.
So what's the purpose of having two settings?

Just crummy design basically. Its obviously not
necessary since everyone else doesnt need it.

Yeah, I usually do that with a new drive, keep the
old one for a while in case the new one dies early.

Urk. Likely it produced a big over voltage on the 12V
rail or something and thats what killed the drives.
But I still had an old one sitting on a shelf (this was the original
one in our former thread.), and it had most everything on it.

Yes, HDTach is the best test for that.

forget ghost,
after 2 days of troubleshooting ghost errors (trying to copy win2k boot ntfs
partition) found and downloaded a trial version of R-Drive Image @
http://www.r-tt.com/
It copied the the entire partion in less than 30min (10gigs data) worked
perfectly from windows. Re-booted to the new drive with no problems at all,
very impressed.
