Can't see fill and font colors

I am having trouble seeing the fill and font colors. If I change the font
to red and type, I see the color. Once I hit enter, the color is changed to
black. If I change the background to yellow, it will not display. I can
see the colors in Print Preview. I tried restoring the xlt file but didn't
help.

Any ideas?
