Can't see address bar in Windows Explorer

On my Windows XP Home computer, when I open Windows Explorer, I don't
see the address bar.

When I check it under View/Toolbars, all that happens is that in the
line with the standard buttons, I see a squared off area marked
"Address". However, I don't see any address bar. Attempting to drag
it has no effect. Right clicking on that area shows me the same
choices as in the View/Toolbars menu, but I don't find any way to
transform it into an address bar.

Would somebody please explain to me how I can make the address bar
appear.

Right click on the toolbar and then uncheck "lock the toolbar". This will
allow you to move the address bar.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for this thread! This particular problem has driven me batty for years. (Fortunately I'm normally nearly-batty so the difference hasn't been more obvious to onlookers.)
