When I click on my INternet explorer to connect to web through the default connnection, there is a bad password saved in that window. I can delete the bad connection only to have it reappear on the next boot up. How can I rid my system of that bad password/connection error

You never mentioned WHAT type of connection you are using for Internet
access. So, are you using dial-up? If so, have you reconfigured your
dial-up connectoid under the Network applet to specify your correct
password?

YEs, even with tech support from Earthlink Dial up assistance. They suggested a corrupted Client Sharing file.

Have you tried blanking your password (by deselecting the save password
option, try to make a connection, abort it) and then filling it in
(enable the save password option, try to make a connection, and then
specify it)? This not only attempts to blank out your password but also
forces a toggle in the state or behavior for that function.

Have you checked out the following KB article yet?

User Name and Password Not Retained for Dial-Up Connection in
Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=818895

Although the KB article says they will waive the service fee, when I
have called to get an unreleased hotfix and it sounds very applicable to
my problem, they just give me the URL to download the file along with a
password (or it is in a temp FTP directory so I have to get it quick).
Since they won't know if it fixed your problem (because you've hung up
to do the download and then test it), they can't charge you because
there is no verification if the alpha hotfix fixed your problem or not.

I tried deselecting and reselecting, but not what you describe. Un clear as to when to try abort, but I'll try that.

How do you know that it's a bad password? Windows XP always displays
the same number of characters for a dial-up password, regardless of
the password's actual length. Try connecting and see if it works.

if all else fails, you could try deleting that connection
and creating it again from scratch.

I tried it without success. Will continue to read the posted
articles.

Another diagnostic I thought of: enable logging. In the Phone and Modem
applet in Control Panel, under the Modems tab panel, select your modem
and click Properties. Under the Diagnostics tab panel, enable "Append
to log". You can click the View Log button to see if there is any old
stuff in an existing logfile (just erase it all and close/save the
logfile). Then attempt the connection which results in an error. Maybe
something will pop up in the logfile to tell you what is going wrong.

Already tried that and it didn't work. In fact, in raises from the dead and delete and reinstalls itself upon a reboot.

You never mentioned what ISP (Internet Service Provider) you use. Is it
AOL? Did your ISP make you download some "special" and proprietary
software that is needed to make the dial-up to their service (and you
cannot simply use the Windows-supplied dialer)? If so, you have 3rd
party dialing software that will ignore the connectoids defined or
altered by you. AOL creates a dummy connectoid only because it cannot
get around not having one in Windows. If you delete it or alter its
configuration, it just gets deleted and a new default dummy connectoid
gets defined and used. If your problem is with 3rd party dialing
software then you need to contact its author for technical support or
discuss the problem with other AOL users.

If you are deleting a connectoid and something ELSE is recreating it
(i.e., other than you) then you need to find out what that something
else is. Deleted connectoids don't just undelete themselves. SOMETHING
defines a new one. That is not normal behavior except maybe for 3rd
party dialer software ... or spyware.

OK EJ, instead of shouting at Steve, how about a little more explanation.
From what you have said I presume you are using a Dial Up Connection?
I also presume that when you fire up IE you get your default connection
Connect window with a User Name?
Is the user name correct?
If yes then you should have your password below, normally indicated by a row
of ********* which bear no relation to the length of the password and also a
tick in the Save Password Box?
Type in correct password and connect. Does this work OK?
If YES then disconnect and try again.
If it does not work the 2nd Time without retyping the Password then you have
a problem with saving Passwords.
Try setting up a 2nd connection to your ISP and if that works OK repeatedly
then make that Connection your default and either leave or delete the
original connection.
If none of this works I suggest running Spybot Search & Destroy for Malaware
software and possibly sfc /scannow to check your system file integrity.
