Can't rename a shared printer

I'm not sure if this is an XP question or has more to do with our Win 2000
Server.

We have some shoddy Quicken 2004 software on an XP Pro workstation that is
trying to print to a shared printer on another workstation. Unfortunately,
Quicken has a bug where it won't recognize a printer with the word "on" in
the name. Win 2000 automatically assigns all network printers a name that
includes "on" (for example, the printer I'm trying to send to is
automatically called "Lexmark 321 on WS11").

Is there any way to rename this printer on the XP WS? Is there some way to
install it as a local printer by setting up a virtual port? If so, how is
that done with XP?

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

Here is what I did to fix the problem:

- Define a new LPT port from cmd (start->run->cmd):
- net use LPT2 \\<IP-of-server>\<printer-name>
- i.e. 'net use LPT2 \\10.200.55.45\laserjet8250
- Open Start->Settings->Printers, click "Add new printer"
- Choose local printer, on port LPT2
- Select the proper driver and finish the wizard

This allows you to define a network printer as a local printer and name it
anything you want. There is a caveat though, to do the 'net use' command the
printer share name must be DOS compliant, that is, without any spaces (so a
printer share named "HP Laser 5000" would not work, you would need to change
it to "HP-Laser-5000" or something).

I don't know if it is possible to set up a local port for a Win shared
printer, but if the printer is capable of being used on a print server,
you can set that up as a "local" (not network) TCP port. I had to do that
in some cases when HP or Linksys software could not find the print server
(especially if on a different subnet).

Quicken sounds brain dead if it cares about the printer name. I noticed a
Quicken 2004 related error in my event log (mrtRate service failed to
start, the system could not find the file specified), when I had never
used it. So I uninstalled Quicken.
