I guess I kind of receive email - about every two days or so. It went from a
quick easy operation to agonizingly slow...I can only receive email
occasionally and it waits in the outbox for hours. I uninstalled McAfee,
checked the servers (working fine for everyone but Vista me) checked the
ports (correct). What's next? By the way this started suddenly. It worked
perfect one day - not at all the next. Was there an update that caused
this? Here's the message I get after one hour of trying to use email:

Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E zimmer.csufresno.edu

I noticed lots of others with this issue, too.

After uninstalling McAfee did you run this?

What is the exact, complete error message?

That doesn't look like a complete Windows Mail error message. If you need
more help, right click on the error message and copy all of it to your next
message.

The McAfee uninstall procedure often fails to clean up properly. You may
need to run this program to clean up after it:

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1>

You may even need to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

You may want to ask csufresno.edu if their mail server software is up to
date on updates for it. If it's from Microsoft, there was an update several
months ago that is needed to make it work well with Vista users.

I ran the recommended McAfee removal stuff - no change. Here's the complete
message I receive:
Account: 'zimmer.csufresno.edu', Server: 'zimmer.csufresno.edu', Protocol:
POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC19

I could not find any email setup information for zimmer.csufresno.edu,
ecept that it seems to be reserved for faculty and staff of Fresno State.
You should probably ask your school's IT staff for help.

Have you asked the school IT staff if that server is working well for other
Vista users? If it uses Microsoft server software, there was an update
available several months ago that is needed to make it work well for
Vista users.

Also, you might make it try a little harder to send mail. Click on Tools,
then Options, then Send. If there is no check mark in the box before
Send messages immediately, click on this box, then Apply. Click on OK.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no protection not provided by the regular
resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.
