Can't read word 2007 documents in word 2002

Hi, I got a new laptop with Vista and Office 2007. When I save documents in
Word and click on the compatibility option for 1997-2003, I still cannot open
it on my desktop, which has XP and Word 2002. It looks like hieroglyphics.
What can I do???? I'm so frustrated.
