Can't Read Files on RW CD

I've written files, both data text and tif, to a RW CD on my desktop using
Explorer 'Send To' in XP Home SP2. I can view these files on my desktop using
Explorer but my Laptop, Win ME, does not read the CD.

you said using send to.

did you by chance though open up explorer onto the cd drive and select
"write these files to cd" on the left hand side?

You will need to push the write button to finalise it.

I did use "write these files to cd" and the files were written to the RW CD
and can be viewed on my desktop using XP SP2, but when I put CD into my
desktop using ME and click on 'D' my disc drive a window comes up requesting
me to insert disc into drive.

How old is the laptop? Will the CD in the laptop read CD-Rs? Can you read
the CD-RWs from your desktop in a third computer? Is the laptop a DVD/CD
combo drive?

Some older CD drives just won't read anything but pressed CDs, and many
music or video systems won't either. It sounds from what you've said as if
the desktop is creating the disk successfully, because you can read it on
the desktop. If you can also read it in a third computer, ruling out
something like a misaligned beam or some other quirk of the desktop drive,
the laptop CD drive has to be the culprit. If the laptop reads other media
successfully, I don't think there's much you can do.

No. I have Sonic "Record Now" pre-installed on desktop but not on laptop. I
think this problem occurred after I downloaded AntiSpyware from MS. I've
looked to see if there is a setting that I should enable but can't find one.

ok lets try something coulf you "restore" your computer to the time before
you download ms antispyware and see if that solves the problem.

To restore your comp. Click Start -> all programs -> Accessories -> System
tools -> system restore. Follow the wizard and choose the date you download
ms spyware and select it on the list.

once is finish doing what is doing see if that works.

Keep us posted on what happens.

XP udf format is most likely different from the CD writing software on the
WinME laptop.

The only time closing a session is important is if wrtten in ISO format,
which XP cannot do for CDs. If wrtten in such a manner and the session is
closed, any CD reader will be able to read same in any recent MS operating
system, ncluding dos if CDrom dos driver is installed.

Most XP file systems are formatted NTFS. This could be that Win ME is FAT32
and doesn't recognize the XP program. You may need to search for a recording
program compatible with both. Try freeware at www.cnet.com.
Good luck.

You do not format a CD with NTFS or FAT32... It is a CD file system of some
sort - for which Windows reads most/all of.

More than likely, the drive in the Windows ME is not of a quality that may
be able to read the particular blank CD (or the CD is not of good quality,
etc.)

Most XP file systems are formatted NTFS.

NTFS is for hard disks, not CD or DVD disks.

CDRWs often need UDF reader software, particularly on older systems.
This could be that Win ME is FAT32
and doesn't recognize the XP program.

It may be missing CD UDF reading software, yes, but it has nothing to do
with NTFS or FAT filesystems.

Installing Nero or Sonic or Easy CD or equivalents would likely solve the
problem.
