My windows is up to date.
I also installed DirectX9 and Media player 9, and Divx
code.
However, my friend sent me some movies but I can't seem
to play them in windows.
The movies' file names are like: cartoon(xvid).avi or
cartoon.xvid.avi !!
When I try to play the movie, on the left buttom, it
would say "error codec"!!
I can hear the sound of the movie, but just no picture.

What should I do now??

You're just missing the codec (decoder) the movie file requires in order to
display properly. I only have the WMP codecs installed on my system, plus
this one additional codec: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/ and I've
had pretty much no problems at all playing any divx, xvid, avi files. If
you install the ffdshow codec, your Windows Media Player will find it
automatically when you try to play one of those movie files, and it should
display properly.

I could advise you to download this codec identifer:
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ and have it look at those movie files and
tell you which codec you need, and then you can go out looking for the codec
it recommends, but from my experience that "ffdshow" codec should do the
trick.

Regards,
Ian.

The clue is in the filename... XViD is a variant of the DiVX mpeg4 codec and
must be installed seperately. Search on google for the XViD codec,
download, and install it and you'll be able to watch the movies...

Possibly it's an older codec than the version the movie was encoded with?
There is no real control over the version of DiVX as from the official site
you can only download the source and not the binaries, they usually come
from other people who have compiled it themselves and possibly made unknown
changes. Your best option then is to search on Google for the FFDShow
directplay filter. This filter is able to decode pretty much all movies
encoded with any of the various different mpeg4 codecs...
