Can't play midi music files in ME

I use Chime Tray Play in W98SE, it plays all my music format files. Since it is a
single small executable, I assume it uses W98 default files to play the music files.

In another computer with ME, it plays WAV and MP3 files, won't play midi files.

Is Windows ME missing some file that is typically used to play midi files?

It could also be a configuration problem, with that machine sending the
MIDI to the external port as a default. Does the player act like it is
doing something?

It's been a while since I converted to XP, but I believe there was a
setting in the Control Panel that could control where MIDI is sent.
And a good piece of software will allow you to change it in the
settings, too.

re-reading my reply, I see that there is more info I could give you:

On my machine, there are 3 different options for MIDI output:

1) "Microsoft GS Wavetable" (a relatively new software driver that
renders MIDI)
2) Have the sound card (soundblaster) render it for you
3) Send it out the MIDI port.

If the PC has no GS driver and no MIDI-capable soundcard, you may by
SOL. But, like I claimed up above, the default may be MIDI out, and
that's why it's not working.

in XP, Control Panel->Sounds, Speech, and Audio->Sounds and Audio
Devices->MIDI

I remember in ME it was slightly different, but still in the control
panel.

Plus any good software should give you the same options in its
configuration menu.
