Can't paste in Word

I tried the MS Office test drive (
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101687261033.aspx ) to test MS
Word's find and replace (MS Works 7 has a bug and I wanted to upgrade to
something else). I noticed was there was no ruler, so I clicked the margins
icon to see how it works. Then I tried pasting, but I didn't see a paste icon
so I tried ctrl v but that didn't work. How to you paste text in MS Word? The
text I was pasting was copied from a PDF document, but I don't know if that
was the problem.

Word 2007 does indeed have a ruler by default - if your installation doesn't
something is amiss. Does it appear if you staret Word in its safe mode (hold
the CTRL button whilst starting)? If it does there is some external issue
causing the problems. See -
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm then
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm
If it doesn't try repairing the installation (I would do that anyway).

I accidentally found the ruler. I had to hover over the ruler area for a
couple of seconds for the ruler to appear. And I found the cut and paste
icons on the top left, but they weren't clickable on the toolbar or in the
right click menu even though I had text in the clipboard and was able to
paste it elsewhere.

This is certainly not the default condition - did you check out the
troubleshooting measures I suggested?

I don't think the test drive of Word lets you start it in safe mode - it just
installs and opens and I think it has to be reinstalled when it's closed -
but I tried the test drive twice and couldn't paste either time. The ruler
isn't important to me. Maybe pasting isn't allowed in the test drive, but
nothing says that. I don't want to install a trial version. I'll just deal
with the annoying bugs in Notepad and Works for now.

The 'Test Drive' as I understand it is not the proper trial version. The
trial is a full version of Office for as long as it lasts.
