Can't open .xls file with Excel 97 SR2

J

Jim H.

Hi,
I have a problem with a .xls file. It opens but it
doesn't. What I mean is that Excel thinks it's open but
nothing happens. The Excel window remains blank and the
menu selections that would be active with an open file
remain greyed out. However, If I make a copy of the file,
open the original and then try to open the copy, Excel
says that I can not have two files with the same name open
at the same time. When I go to close Excel, even though
the screen is blank, it asks me if I want to save changes
made to the file before closing the program. I did all the
usual things like Scan Disk, Checking the Registry and so
forth but the problem remains. Any help will be welcome.
Thanks, Jim H.

Hi Jim,

After you open the file, choose Window/Unhide from the Excel menu and
see if the name of the file is on the list. If so, you can unhide it from
there.

Jim, I have the same problem and just "unhiding" from the "window" drop down menu, does not fix problem for me.
