Can't open word documents

Everything was fine, using documents. Computer froze up
and from then on when you opened word it flashed on
screen like open. Click on open document, it makes a
shadow temp file but never opens. You actually need to
use the End task bar to close word (which doesn't open).
I have a PC with Win 98 on it with Office 97. This is what
isn't working. I tried reinstalling it, still nothing.
please help.
