Can't Open Sites Without Typing Full "http:///" Addressess

The only way IE6 will open up websites is if I type the
full address, eg. "http://wwww.google.com". Leaving out
the "http://" causes a pop-up error window which states
that "Internet explorer could not open 'address', please
check path or internet address and try again".

What gives? I've checked for viruses and spy/mal/adware,
and I'm clean. I remember older versions of IE having a
similar problem that was related to sites encoding in the
wrong language... but that doesn't seem to the the issue
here.
