When I try and open the registry editor either by
clicking on the registry editor shortcut or by clicking
start, run, regedt32, etc.. It will flash open for only a
second then it closes. Why does it do this? How can I
fix this?

Thanks for any help,
Mike

This is symptomatic of virus infection. Immediately take the infected
machine off the Internet and any other lans. If you don't have
antivirus software installed (and I'm guessing you don't), then from a
different machine download Stinger here:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Stinger is a standalone av tool. Put it on a floppy or cd-r and run it
on the infected machine in Safe Mode. You may also boot with a
commercial antivirus (Norton or Mcafee for example) cd and scan that
way. Make note of the names of any viruses found - you may need to get
specialized removal tools. When the computer is clean, install an
antivirus program and keep it updated.

There are several reasons, the first beings a virus/worm, etc. You should
also notice that you can't run: Start/Run/Msconfig nor the Task Manager.

Run a scan:

Other measures to gain access to Regedit to enable you the option to repair:
