can't open pps extensions?

I downloaded and saved to my desktop ppviewer. I opened it "ppviewer.exe"
and clicked RUN. It installed and I found it at Start, All Programs as
Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003. When I click on it a screen opens
up: Look in: My Documents. At the bottom is File name: which is blank.
Where it says Files of type: PowerPoint Presentations is there. There is
nothing in My Documents that I want to open. What I am trying to open is an
e-mail with a .pps, a Microsoft Power Point Slide Show. When I try to open
it a window pops up with "This file does not have a program associated with
it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options
control panel". Can someone explain what I need to do to be able to read
messages with .pps? I have Windows XP Home Ed. Version 2002 with SP2.

Save the email attachment, then double click on it. If you installed the
viewer, it should open for you.

Go to that pps file in Explorer. Right click it and choose Open With. The
window that comes up when you do this varies. If (in your case) no program
has yet been assigned to open that type file it will include various
programs. If Powerpoint Viewer 2003 is one of the options, choose it and
put a checkmark before "always use this program to open this type file". If
the viewer is not listed there click on the Browse button and find it. Then
do the above.

If the file you want to do this with already has a program associated with
it and you want to change it, right clicking and choosing Open With will
bring up a different window. If you want to change programs you click on
Choose Program. Now a window similar to above will show. Choose the
program and click a checkmark before "always use this program to open this
type file".
