Cant open folders or directories in windows without it 'refreshing' & closing

I can't go anywhere in my PC without seeing this message -

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

What can I do?

Seems as though some of your Windows files have been
tampered with...my suggestion would be to
reinstall/repair Windows XP and this may solve the
problem.
