Can't open file

I have a 40 page document that I prepared in Works 7.0. I forgot to close
the file when I shut down the computer. Now, when I try to open it I get the
message “Works cannot open ‘C:\Documents and Settings\…..wps’. The file may
be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any
of the installed components, or the file may be corrupted.†Can anyone tell
me how to open this file? Thank you.

If you forgot to close/save the file, it may be gone, period! If it is still
listed, rightclick it and see if it has content, size, how many kb, etc.

If you have Word included in your Works package, you could try one of its
features to try and recover whatever's left of the original document in
that corrupted file. Under File> Open: "Recover text from any file" is one
of the choices in Word's "files of type" drop down list.

TIP: When working with large documents, work from a copy. After new work
session is finished and saved, delete old copy.

I don't have Works. Is there anything else I can do to recover the contents
of the file? Thank you.

You don't have Works? The error message you posted was "Works cannot
open..." Did you have Works at one time? What program were you using to
write that document (.wps file)?

Robert, your post also said that you have Works 7.0. Some packages of Works
include the MS Office program, Word. Some don't. If yours does not, you
could try the MS Word trial
(http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/trial.mspx) and give it
a go at that file. Other word processor programs (the one in Open Office
perhaps?) may have similar features.
