can't open excell files from the desktop

I can not open an excell file directly from the desktop. When I click on the
file icon, it opens the excell program to a blank dark sheet with no lines or
cells, but I must then go to the "look in" pane, go to the desktop list, then
click on the file to open it. I have windows XP and Microsoft Office XP
loaded on my pc. I have not had this problem with other Excell programs in
the past. I need some smart help!!!

Hi
try the following:
goto 'Tools-Options-General " and uncheck "Ignore other Applications"
Exit Excel and try again

If this doesn't work try to re-register Excel

1. Close Excel first and
2. On the Windows Taskbar
2.1 Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
2.2 Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

I have this same problem I have an HP computer with Windows XP and excel XP, I
noticed it only happens when I first start up my computer and for some reason
my computer does not fully Boot up if I go to programs and activate excel it
seems to fix this problem that way.
