Can't Open Attachments

I am unable to open Excel or Word attachments while receiving email. The
system locks up. I have disabled Norton and the same thing happens. I use
Outlook 2003. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks

No. It just gets hung up. I eventually have to close both programs, Excel
and Outlook. Then I get the window that this program is not responding and
to End Now. I don't get it.

Did you disable the Norton Outlook add in? Have you checked your application
event viewer?

Yes, I disabled the Norton Add-on, but I did not check the event viewer. I
can do that and report back to you.

Disabling the addin may not be enough. Uninstall and reinstall without the
addin.

Thanks for your reply. I am going to start Outlook in safe mode then try
opening the attachments. If it works, then it definitely has something to do
with an add-in. If it doesn't work, then I am not sure what my next step
would be. I will post back tomorrow.

I am posting back. I started Outlook in Safe Mode and removed the Norton COM
Add-Ons (BTW, these load even in safe mode). While Outlook was receiving
messages, I opened an email with an Excel attachment. When I double-clicked
the attachment, Outlook hung for approxmately 1 minutes. While in hung mode,
the send/receive was halted and the hour-glass just sat there. I waited it
out. Excel finally opened after a minute or so. Once opened, the
send/receive resumed. I tested a Word document with the same results. I
also tested a .jpg, and that opened with no problem. After the send/receive
completes, the Excel attachments open within 10 seconds. It appears the
send/receive modules is having an issue. Any advice?

my problem deals with not being able to open picture attachments. they are
clearly identified as jpg images, but the icon, a white paper with colored
icons on it, leads me to believe it's not attached to an application, but
why? The default setting for viewing jpg pictures as attachments is windows
picture and fax viewer (for XP OS). why do I get the message "application not
found" when I try to open the attachment with a right click? any ideas,
suggestions, help????
