I have XP Home. I receicevd an email on Yahoo for my new house plans from my
designer. It is a CAD program (.dwg) with file type:application/octet-stream.
It wants to know what program I want to use to open it. I clicked on "find"
file and it takes me to a purchase software site. I guess I need a download
that I don't currently have to open it. Can someone tell me how to open this
file or where to go to download.
Thank in advance. My builder is waiting on this email, so your prompt help
is really appreciated.

Call your builder and ask him what program he used to create the house
plans. Usually *.dmg files are image files used in Apple operating
systems. Your builder should not expect you to purchase a CAD program or
an Apple computer to read the plans. Tell him to consider printing out
the plans and sending them to you via something like FedEx.

Frankly, this isn't very professional behavior on the builder's part and
I'd really give a second thought to whether you want to hire this person.

Contact your builder to find out what software was used to create the file
and how to read it. Ask them if there is a free reader for it.

Hi Debbie,

A .dwg file is created by AutoDesk's AutoCAD.

The designer should have sent you pdf's, for the average folk.

As was suggested, contact them and ask for a pdf file format so you can
view them in Acrobat Reader.

Or alternately, there are dwg viewer available. Here's one:

Thanks Malke,
I finally opened the files with Autodesk Design Review. The designer is an
engineer where I work and is doing this as a favor for a fraction of the
price, so I can't yell too loud, right? Thanks again.

Thanks!! You saved me. Autodesk opened it right up. The designer is a co
worker/engineer and is designing the house as a favor for me, so your reply
really helped me out.
