Can't move subfolders to pst folder

I am getting the following error message when i tried to ove subfolders from
my current inbox to personal folder. I've checked that the pst file has not
reach the limit of 2GB. I am using Outlook 2000 and receiving mail from my
company's exchange server.

*Can't move the items. The item could not be moved. It was either already
moved or deleted, or access was denied.

*Can't move the items. You don't have permission to create an entry in this
folder. Right-click the folder, and then click Properties to check your
permissions for the folder. See the folder owner or your administrator to
change your permissions.

Hi Alvin,
if you are using exchange, please read

I am not sure exactly what Alvin is trying to do. In an Exchange Server
environment, I would assume that his e-mail (more specifically, mailbox) is
already a personal folder. You can easily create subfolders and move
messages between the inbox and subfolders. But the heading seems to suggest
he wants to add items to a *.pst file. This is not possible. The pst file
is the backup of personal files, and Outlook does it without any user
involvement. Adding stuff to it is not possible. OL does it by itself.

Since Alvin seems to be operating in an exchange environment, the pst file
works differently there. In my experience (when my home office PC
synchronized OL with an Exchange Server via dialup, the pst file is
maintained on the network, not on the user's pc. The offline user ends up
with a file called *.ost, which is the offline version of a *.pst file. It
does not behave the way the *.pst file does and the relationship between the
two is a little involved. Here are some MS KB articles that might be

Yes, I'm working in an exchange environment but all pst files are stored
locally in the hard drive. What i want to do is move subfolders from my
active personal folder to the archived pst because i have reached the pst

Since right-click>Move won't work, then right-click>Copy. When the copy
completes, select the original folder, and press Shift-Delete. If that
doesn't work, then you'll need to create a new PST, make it your delivery
location, copy the folders you want to retain from the old PST to the new
one, close the old PST with right-click>Close and the next time you close
Outlook, delete the old PST.

I can move individual files, but i can't ask users to move thousands of
emails individually. But thanx for your help.

You may not have to move "thousands" individually. Try selecting a large
group of the individual items and moving that.

i've tried that already but the error message kept appearing.

Well, if you can items copy individually, but not in large numbers, select a
smaller subset, say the first half of the messages, and try that. If it
doesn't work, select the second half and try that. Perhaps you have an item
that has a problem and you'll be able to copy multiple items as long as you
don't include that particular item in the copy. If needed, keep reducing
the size of the selected group until you find a size that works. Even
moving 100 or ten at a time is better than individually.

After rebooting the mail server, I can move the file without any errors. So
i guess it has something to do with the server side. Thanks for all your help
