can't make attachment. Get out of memory error

When I compose a message and want to make an attachment
outlook 2002 comes back with an "out of memory or
resources" error. This is regardless of how few
applications I have open.

Any suggestions?

Yes, if it's on WINNT 4.0, set the virtual memory using
the 11-50 rule. If it's W2K try simply increasing the
virtual memory. (The 11-50 rule does not apply in W2K).

I am using win xp pro. With 512mb ram, 60gb free hd
space. The page file is over 1 GB, so I'm guessing it is
really not a memory issue. The attachment problem only
occurs when attaching to messages in rtf format.

Since 3 days, I have the same problem when I want to make an
attachment to Outlook 2003. Before it worked fine.
As fas as I know, I only installed the latest MS security patches and
have no virusses or spyware on the PC.

Anybody out there who can help?

Since you didn't quote the original message to which you were replying and
since you posted as a new topic rather than a reply, we can't tell what "the
same problem" means.

The same means not being able to make an attachment in Outlook 2003.
Some testing learned me that the problem "only" exists when I use the
RTF format for the email. Attaching a file works when the format is
HTML or plain text.
