Can't log out of one of the accounts

I am unable to log out of one of the two accounts on my system by the normal
means, i.e. Start > Log Off > Log Off button. It is, however, possible to log
off this account by selecting Users > Logoff in Task Manager.

The system is XP Home SP2 and both accounts have identical settings.
 
I'm bumping this post in the hope that someone may be able to help with the
problem.

All suggestions will be gratefully received.

Try this:

Log in as built-in Administrator and then turn on Welcome screen and Fast
User Switching. Follow these steps:

Click Change the way users log on or off
Check "Use the Welcome Screen" box
Check "Use Fast User Switching" box
Click Apply Options button
