Cant log on to workstation

I am trying to fix a workstation running Win XPPro. It does not allow me to
log on to it. I start it up and the login screen appears. When I enter my
login and password it starts to login then it says it is loggin out, and goes
back to the login screen.
I tried booting in safe mode, with a command prompt same thing. When I
tried to log in as administrator - it does the same thing.

Any ideas?

Has malware been recently removed from the system? If so see this link:

This can happen as a consequence of disk manipulation (e.g.
disk ghosting) or because of some malware interaction. It is
easily solved if the machine is networked, and less easily if
it is not. Have a look here:
