are you running in domain mode? like say for example microsoft.com domain?

click on the "Options >>" button (at the logon screen after you hit
Ctrl+Alt+Del) and make sure in the "log on to:" is your computer name
(computername -this computer).

Give me more details about your environment like network info
(dsl,t1,dial-up), Let me know how that goes.

You may want to login via safe mode with networking. This is done by hittting the F8 key during boot-up. From there choose the administrator account and see if you can rest your password. If this diesnt work then disjoin your domain and rejoin.

Boot the computer to safe mode

For safe mode shut down the computer and restart. The moment you see the first screen (in your case you would get the HP logo) start tapping the F8 key on the keyboard (make sure you press and hold it, but tapp it)

Tap it for 5-6 times and you will get windows advanced boot options menu

Select the first option 'safe mode' and hit enter
it will ask you to select the operating system and would 'windows xp home edition' highligted, just hit enter

You will get the logon screen, select 'Administrator'

You will get an message for safe mode, just click on 'yes'

Then go to control panel-->user accounts

It will show you your user account. click on it and remove the password

Then reboot the computer and now you will be able to logon using your user account
