Can't kill some processes

Guest

Dear Community,

i hoope to get some useful hint on how to solve my problem.

Up to now, i've had problems with the following programs:
- ICQ (After Bootup the program doesn't show...but the process is still
active)
- Azureus
- Half-Life 2 based games (CS:S, DOD:S, HL2-Modifications)

Problem description:
Azureus:
While running or quitting the programm it doesn't react. -> right click ->
doesnt wait for the program!
-->> The GUI dissapears, but the process is still running and can't be quit.
Even c:\taskkill /IM azureus.exe /F shows that the process was terminated
sucessfully, but its still running.

It the same with the HL2-based games...just that the sceens is still covered
in the game window, so i can't use my computer after that...a reset is needed
after that.

I hope you can help me with this problem...it's really anoying.

Im using Windows Vista Business 32Bit with the latest drivers/updates.

sincerely yours
Brataq

Right click on the process in task manager and choose "Kill Process Tree".
That will usually work when "kill process" fails to do as expected.

I'm sorry, but i tried that too. Nothing happened...the process is still
listed in the Task Manager. I can't start a new process (like icq) until the
old is somehow terminated.

Sorry, can't help you. Personally, I would dump a misbehaving program for
one that does as is expected.

I have the same problem, but with Firefox. Sometimes when I try and start up
the program, the window wont appear, but the process will show in Task
Manager. No matter what I do it wont close, and sometimes gives me a message
saying "Can't terminate process. Access denied." [something like that]. This
happens around half the time I try and open firefox.
I'm running Vista with all the proper drivers and everything. And the
firefox I'm using is the latest, 2.0.8

I uninstalled and reinstalled firefox, and it fixed the problem for awhile.
But just the other day though I started having the problem again, so I'm
still at a lost of what to do.

maybe few days or weeks later the problem reoccurs. Any ideas how to
fix this?

I work in IT company and I am not the only one reporting this problem
in Vista.

What do you do there... carry memos to and from the mail room to
various offices?

If it's an IT company, there should be someone there who knows WTF
they are doing.

I can't stand this. I've even reformated my computer and I still get
this problem where no matter what browser I'm in after it's reached a
certain point of browsing it just gets stuck and I can't kill the
process in task manager. I hate restarting my PC over and over and over
and over again just to use the internet. That's hard on my hard drive.
Why can't I kill a process in task manager as easily as it is in XP???
The problem is in Vista somewhere and I know it. I thought it might be a
browser cache problem but I've set that to the very highest. I should be
able to EASILY Kill a process and restart the program without having to
reboot my system everytime chrome/firefox/IE/Opera gets overloaded!!!

( NO people it's not my firewall/antivirus/spyware/malware/ I've tried
it on a clean OS with minimal programs and still the same thing...and no
it's not my Internet provider, I have another two PC's with XP they work
fine with internet )

Maybe it's your NIC card.

Another freebie, this one from Microsoft, is Process Explorer:

Before you complain "But it's Microsoft", here is where MS got it:

"The Sysinternals web site was created in 1996 by Mark Russinovich and
Bryce Cogswell to host their advanced system utilities and technical
information. Microsoft acquired Sysinternals in July, 2006. Whether
you’re an IT Pro or a developer, you’ll find Sysinternals utilities to
help you manage, troubleshoot and diagnose your Windows systems and
applications. If you have a question about a tool or how to use them,
please visit the Sysinternals Forum for answers and help from other
users and our moderators. "
