I can't install xp, whenever i try, the monitor goes to
sleep mode.
I've tried with a different CD and it works fine. Well, it
works till it asks for the key. But i can't use my key
with that CD.
I try to email the microsoft support and it asks form my
product id. But i can't get that till it's installed!

any ideas?

Nic,

The product ID you need is on the package, if you purchased a retail version
of Windows. For some OEM computers that have the OS preinstalled you will
find it on the case in the form of a sticker.

i searched the box for the product ID. couln't find any
numbers in the format that the web page says it should be
in.

if it's on the box, why wouln't they tell you thatn when
you click the button to "find your product ID"

The "Product ID" is NOT on the box, nor has it ever been on packaging
material. Sir_George is obviously referring to the "Product Key"
which can be on the package or with the retail version of XP - it's on
a sticker inside the folder.

Your CD may be defective - if it is, return it to the place where you
purchased it and exchange it for a new one. Or contact MS Customer
Support for a replacement.

The Product ID that Support asks for is the one generated during support
- there is usually a screen comes up near the end - and can be found
after installation on the Control Panel - System page
