Can't install XP Professional Upgrade - PLEASE HELP!

Hello (again to some), I have the Windows XP UPGRADE CD, and it clearly
states in the text that came with the CD that if I do NOT have an operating
system installed on the computer I want to install XP Pro on, that I CAN use
this CD. Well, after reformatting the hard drive of a computer, I decided I
wanted to install XP Professional using ths particular CD. It made it all
the way up to agreeing to terms and conditions and "Insert CD" (from DOS of
course), but when I did, it saidthe CD was invalid or it could not read it.
Man, XP is kiilling me, fast. Please help! thank you.

You can, as long as you have a CD from a qualifying product
(Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4, or 2000) to insert as proof of
ownership.

What CD did you insert? It needs to be an installation CD (not a
restore CD) of one of the types enumerated above. If yours is a
restore CD, write back for more instructions.
 
You need to insert an old Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME or 2000 CD
to insert in the CD drive. Otherwise, you cannot perform a clean install
since you do not have a qualifying previous Windows CD. In that case,
you'll need a "Full Version" and not an "Upgrade Version" of Windows XP.

You need to have an original working Microsoft Windows 98,98SE or ME
install CD in order for the upgrade to be able to check CD. If you have a
recovery CD then that version of Windows needs to be installed first.

Windows 2000 Pro install CD can only be used during an upgrade to XP PRo.
XP Home does/will not "upgrade" from 2000 Pro.

That's true, but somewhere in the installation you'll be asked to
insert the disk of a qualifying system. A Win98, Win98SE, Win95, or
Win2000 disk will work here.

Don't quite understand this. It seems it was already reading the
install CD and running the installation routine. Exactly what was the
prompt? What CD did you put in? Exactly what was the error message?

Of course, you could reinstall the older version of Windows, then use
the XP installer disc to begin a clean install of XP. IF there is a
previous version of XP on the HD, you will be able to delete all
partitions, then create a new partition for XP and install it there.

You will not be asked for a disk from a previous qualifying version of
Windows if there was a version of Windows on the HD when you started
the XP installer. This previous installation of Windows could even be
a version of XP. All that matters is that there is an installation of
Windows 98/98se/ME/NT4.1+/2000/XP Home/Pro already on the HD when you
boot with the XP install disc.

In the middle of my installation, when it was finalizing things, the entire
screen went black and I had to hard boot and start all over again. I am

You probably ran up against a hardware limitation, such as a video or
sound card which XP had no driver for, or a dirty HD, or hardware
which is not powerful enough for XP, or one or more defective memory
sticks.

Make sure you run the compatibility wizard before attempting to
upgrade your machine with a very strict OS (XP).

Yes it will. XP won't upgrade an existing Win95 system, but when the
Upgrade CD asks for proof of a qualifying OS, it will accept a Win95
CD.

Sorry, that's *not* correct. What Carey says below is right.
Although you can not upgrade over the top of a Windows 95
installation, you *can* use a Windows 95 CD as proof of a
previous version when doing a clean installation with an Upgrade
version.
