Can't install XP OS related programs/ updates

I am trying to update my computer with Windows update and downloads of DX9.0c
, Media Player 10 etc. No OS related programs will install or uninstall.
The computer I have comes with XP on a restore disk so I can't just install
XP again and update after. Any suggestions why I can't install any OS
related programs? I can't even install SP1 again and start from there.
I need to do this bad.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
