Can't install, uninstall, download patches etc. - please help

For last 1 month I haven't been able to install or uninstall any program on
the Windows XP system (windows install hangs up everytime).
I also haven't been able to download Windows update or virus dat file as the
download can never complete. Now I can't use my CD-RW either.
I did a local virus scan w/ McAfee as well an online scan but it can't find
any virus.
I get Invalid Backweb application id 137903 error when I restart the
computer but this doesn't seem to be a the cause per MSDN.
Please help as my computer is almost unusable and getting worse. Thanks in
advance.

Backweb is spyware and should be removed.

To remove Adware, Malware, & Spyware that might be residing in your computer
and making it run slow.

Here are some free tools to do this and you need to run more then just a
couple before you decide that they didn't work.

After downloading these always click on update to get the latest
definitions.

Much Thanks. I'll try to download and run these. Fyi, I haven't been able to
download windows updates and virus scan DAT updates so I hope I won't run
into same issue w/ updating these programs.
Also, just wondering if spyware, malware etc are causing Windows Installer,
CDRW program etc to hang...

I downloaded all the SW you mentioned (Ad Aware SE, Spybot Search and
Destroy,
Spy Sweeper, CW Shredder, Bazooka) and it removed dozens of spyware and
entries into registry. However, the following problems still persist:

- After restarring computer, I still get a couple of Backweb error warnings
- Windows update didn't complete (I got the error 0X800A01AD : Windows
update encountered an error and can't display requested page)
- I still can't install any new program using windows installer

Delete all temp files.

Start>Control Panel>Internet Options>Delete Cookies>Yes>Delete Files (check
box Delete Offline Content)>Yes>Apply>OK
