Can't hide index fields

Hitting "Hide hidden text" hides other hidden text, but NOT index fields, so
pages aren't accurate in index.
 
If you clear the check box for "Hidden text" on the View tab of Tools |
Options, Hidden text (including XE fields) will indeed be hidden. I think
you are in the situation where the Show/Hide ¶ button is toggling between
display of Hidden text and all nonprinting characters.
