I got a Linksys wireless g notebook adapter for my compaq presario.
Where I am located, I cannot get dsl cable, so a friend lend me his Airport
base station (Apple) which is compatible to windows. This device is modem and
router in one. I have downloaded the driver from Apple site, but when it
comes to set the parameters of this airport base, I get the massage:
" The airport express assistantfound that windows is not allowed to manage
wireless networks on this computer. This can be the result of having a 3rd
party utility that manages wireless networks. For best results please allow
windows to manage wireless networks."
Despite a perfect radio connection, I cannot communicate with the base
Does someone have an idea??
Thanks for the help.

You need to do what it said - Let Windows manage the wireless card.

Control Panel - Network Connections. RIght click on your Wireless Network,
select Properties. Click the Wireless Networks tab, put a check in the Use
Windows to Configure my Wireless network settings option.

I'm getting this same message from Airport Express Assistant. However,
in my Network Connections windows there is NO Wireless Network entry.
My computer does not have a wireless card in it, but is connected to a
wireless access point via Ethernet, which works fine connecting to
other wireless computers in my home. But, the Airport Express
Assistant does not seem to work with this setup. Any way around this?

From the specs on the Airport Express, it looks like you'd have to put a
wireless card in your PC - it does not look like the AE supports direct
Ethernet connection to the PC:

Interfaces
a.. 10/100BASE-T Ethernet WAN port (RJ-45 connector) for connecting a DSL
or cable modem
b.. 3.5mm mini-Audio jack for analog or optical digital sound (6)
c.. USB port for connecting a USB printer (7)
d.. Apple power adapter
Someone with experience with this model should chime in here, or you should
look for help on an Apple site or forum.

Finally was successful in setting up AirPort Express to wirelessly
connect to my Netgear access point so I can play iTunes music from a
Windows XP that does NOT have a wireless card. Here are the details:

Windows XP Pro with SP2 running iTunes.
XP machine connects to Linksys wired router via Ethernet.
Netgear ME102 wireless access point connects to router.
Access point configured with 128-bit WEP, and the MAC of the AirPort
Express placed in the authorized MAC list.
Procedure:
Plugged in AirPort Express to AC power and did a 10-second reset.
Plugged Ethernet cable from router into AirPort Express.
AirPort Express got a local IP address from router (192.168.1.103).
Started AirPort Admin Utility on XP machine and it found the AirPort
Express unit.
Configured it to be a client on the existing wireless network by
entering the SSID of my wireless network.
Told it I would configure the network address manually; it kept the
local address (192.168.1.103) and other settings.
Turned off the "Windows friendly" security setting.
Entered the 128-bit WEP key, preceded by a $
Gave the AirPort Express a name for iTunes to find.
Click OK and as it was restarting the AirPort Express, I unplugged the
Ethernet cable.
AirPort came up and the light turned green. I was then able to unplug
it and take it to another room and play music there.

I don't know if putting the $ in front of the 128-bit WEP key was the
factor, or whether it was manually setting the IP address. After six
days of fiddling with countless suggestions (many of them from the
Apple discussions group are wrong!) I'm not about to try to find out.
It works great!
