can't get the spacebar to work

Can someone please tell me how to get my spacebar to work. When I click on
it, I don't get a spacing to type the next word. I'm using Office 2000 but
working in Word it that makes sense to you.
 
Does the problem occur only in Word, or in anything you do? (The spaces seem
OK in your email.)
