Can't get rid of "This file was created using a later version of Microsoft Excel"

Tom Sinclair

Hello.

I have an Excel 2000 file created in Office 2000.

What I do is 1) Save the file as Excel 97-2000 format from Office 2000. 2)
Open it on a machine that has only Excel 97 installed. 3) "Save As"
Microsoft Excel File.

Doing this however does not get rid of the warning "This file was created
using a later version of Microsoft Excel" on subsequent Save's.

How do I get rid of this warning message?

Thanks In Advance for any help offered,
Tom

I use XP/2000 not 2000/97, so this is only a guess. Excel does not
recalculate when you open in a previous version. Try replacing = with =
to force the recalc before saving in 97.

I too am looking for an answer to this - I save as a "Excel workbook"
in Excel 97, and still get the message when I re-open and try to save
again.

Any help gratefully appreciated!

Making progress backwards

Hi Simon

From the "well, it worked for me" file -

Having used Excel on a Mac then going back to a PC I got this error.

First make a safe backup of the file.

Save original as a temp file (I name them z.xls - saves proliferation & makes cleaning out old files very simple) then save again as a 5.0/95. Open it up and save as 97 & 5.0/95. I lost some hyperlinks but restored them by copying and pasting the sheet from the original file. Then save as the original file name.

Regards

Chris
