Can't get into my mail

T

TracyOller

I am suddenly being asked for my username and password to get my email from
Outlook Express on Windows Vista. I have never been asked this question
before. I tried to troubleshoot myself by going into the tools and making
sure that nothing was checked under security but it is still asking for it.
I copied the error message that I get in case that is helpful.

Account: 'pop.tds.net', Server: 'pop.tds.net', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR invalid user name or password.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Outlook Express does not run on Vista. I'm assuming you meant Windows Mail.

That type of problem is usually caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:

I tried turning off my Norton Antivirus and that didn't help. I also tried
to sign up for Windows Live Mail, but I'm not sure if that worked or not.
Plus I really want to get into THIS account as it is my main account. I am
missing out on messages and I don't think that Live Mail will transfer them
over. Any other suggestions?

I don't understand what "sign up for Windows Live Mail" means.
There is no sign up. You click the Download button and follow the
prompts to install it.

Just turning off Norton antivirus is seldom sufficient. You need to uninstall
it and follow that up with their removal tool.

Windows Live Mail will handle any account that Windows Mail handles.

I also had this problem and found your post when looking for a solution.
Like you, disabling mail scanner did not help, but the following fixed the
problem for me:

In Windows Mail click on 'Tools' then 'Accounts'. Highlight Mail Server and
click on 'Properties' then 'Servers'. Enter e-mail username and password at
'Incoming Mail Server', click 'Apply' then 'OK'

It's been a while since your post, so you have probably found a solution for
yourself but, if not, hope this works.
