Can't get auto-updates

The auto-updater always hangs when I try to run it. It
did this when I tried to select it on installation and I
had to reboot and install without the auto-update. It
still hangs when I try to run it though. Task Manager
lists two application entries for the Spyware while I'm
trying to auto-update, both of which are 'Not
responding'. 'End task' doesn't clear it down - it
remains hung until I reboot. Any ideas? I'm no techy, so
any help in as plain English as possible would be
appreciated. Many thanks.

Let it sit for a good long time.

Or--set it for auto update at some time when the machine is on and you are
logged in, but not using it--some updates appear to hang, but just take a
while.
