Can't Fix - "Your system has no paging file"

Hi, I'm pretty computer savvy but this problem has me stumped. Everytime I
log into windows, a message appears, "Your system has no paging file, ...", I
then go into my performance tab of my system to manually set my paging file
and another message appears right when I click on the Advanced tab, stating
"Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a
problem that occured with your paging file configuration when you started
your computer. The total paging file size for all disk drives may be somewhat
larger than the size you specified". I then restart my computer and
everything happens all over again, oh btw my computer tends to 'hang' for a
minute while loading windows prior to logging in with no hdd activity.

I then search microsofts knowledge base and come across
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315270), which I
performed each step exactly and surprise, no change, I still get the error
message when logging into windows

To double check that I really don't have a paging file, I load up the
Windows Task Manager and under performance, my total physical memory is
1048044 K and my Commit Charge Limit is 946744 K.

Any help on this would be great! Thanks

Is the size of your page file set to "system managed size"?

Do you have more than one page file?

Yes I have tried all three settings (system managed size, restarted, same
error, no paging file, restarted, no error, back to system managed size,
restarted, same error, custom size, same error)

I have only one page file.

Thanks for the quick response

If you have only one page file, it's located in your system partition,
right? Just want to be sure about that.

Yes it was in my system partition, I've even tried moving the page file over
to another hard disk (I have 2 - non raid) and still nothing, in fact the
pagefile.sys file was not even created! It seems as if windows has lost the
ability to create the file

Thanks for the post, it was a good read, but still no luck on my part in
trying to get this thing to work, it seems as if windows has lost the ability
to create a pagefile.sys file as it's nowhere to be found even when I change
the page file directory to a separate hdd.

Thanks Ted, but this was the same article I originally posted in which I had
followed their instructions step by step with no success

Hi

Nothing via a search in Windows Explorer for pagefile.sys?

Isn't it true that with the system managed size checked, Windows will create
a pagefile if and only if one is needed? Isn't it true that what you see in
the Task Manager for pagefile usages is merely reservations and not actual
usage?

Also, have you enabled viewing of hidden and system files?

Hi Jim

Windows needs as least a 2MB pagefile.sys file before it will load. So,
there has to be a pagefile.sys file somewhere on the OPs hard
disk/partition.

yes all my files are shown and the hide protected operating system files is
not checked (so they're shown) and I still cannot locate the pagefile.sys
file even with the search wizard (with search system folders, search hidden
files and folders, search subfolders). In addition, in the virtual memory
window (system, advanced tab, performance settings, advanced, virtual memory
change), under the heading, total paging file size for all drives I have:
minimum allowed: 2MB
Recommended: 1534MB
Currently Allocated: 0MB

So there really is no paging at all and thank god I have 1GB of ram
installed otherwise I'd be extremely frustrated with this.

Hi

There has got to be a pagefile.sys file - otherwise Windows wouldn't load
and give you an error message.

Hi, I'm not disagreeing with you on that, but unless windows created an alias
for the pagefile.sys file, it's not located on my computer. I've searched
multiple times in the hidden folders, system folders, subfolders, all local
hard drives in the search window with both the 'pagefile' and 'pagefile.sys'
file names and it still does not show up. Any ideas because the only one I
can think of is re-installing windows (Again! I do like the windows OS, it's
just that it's so bloody unpredictable with its errors - I just performed a
fresh install on a reformatted drive 3.5 months ago)

Did you recently upgrade to XP?

""Your System Has No Paging File, or the Paging File Is Too Small" Error
Message After Windows XP Upgrade"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316528/en-us

Also see this info from Kelly's Korner (scroll down 'till you see your error
message):
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_p.htm

Also see here for other ideas:
http://www.google.com/search?q="your+system+has+no+paging+file"

The problem is most often reported in connection with a user's attempt to
clone their hard disc.

You say you have turned off rebooted then turned pagefile back on and still
have the same problem. As you seem to be going round in circles try start
run "sfc /scannow" in case you have some corruption somwwhere. You will most
likely need your windows CD.

You're not crazy. And don't go re-loading Windows just because you can't find
pagefile.sys. I can't find it on the computers in my office, either, even in
Hidden Files and Protected Operating System Files, and even on computers that
are NOT having Paging File errors.

I am also having the same "Your system has no paging file, ..." error, but
on only one of 30 computers in my office. All of my PCs are Windows-XP Pro on
a peer-to-peer network, not on a Domain.

I wonder..... even though I can't find "pagefile.sys", I DID find
"pagefileconfig.vbs" in both C:\I386 and C:\windows\system32 directories.
Could this be the potentially corrupted file we are looking for? Or could it
be another file which needs to work with that file?

More background: At the same time that the one computer in my office started
giving me the "Your system has no paging file, ..." error, I also noticed
that its Device Manager window was blank. This was caused by the dmocx.dll
file getting deleted - somehow - from C:\windows\system32. (See
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...&p=1&tid=fc662518-6966-4c4b-8fd1-173d15e7b463)

So, could our mutual Paging File error be caused by another .dll file also
missing from C:\windows\system32?? There are only about 1,700 .dll files in
that directory, and I don't have time to do an item-by-item comparison
between a fully functional computer and the one generating the error message.

Follow-up:

I ran "sfc /scannow", then ran "eventvwr" to see what was detected, both on
the PC that is experiencing the Paging File error, and on another similarly
configured PC that is not experiencing the Paging File error. (I had to use
the instructions at http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html to get the
System File Checker program to run.)

Nothing significant found; no missing files, just a note on both PCs that
files oembios.dat and oembios.sig had bad signatures and cound not be
restored. Once again, as this message was seen also on the PC that is not
experiencing problems, I doubt that it makes a difference.

So, on the PC that is having the Paging File error I went to Control Panel -
System Properties - Advanced - Performance - Settings - Advanced - Virtual
Memory - Change - and selected the Radio Button for "No Paging File". Then I
rebooted the PC.

Result: The PC booted up immediately without delays or error messages, and
seems to run quite normally. And when I went back into the Control Panel -
System Properties....... to look at the Virtual Memory settings I got a
pop-up window that says "Windows created a temporary Paging File......."

Which is just fine with me.
