Can't find partition to install onto

I used Acronis Disk Director v10 to create a new 40GB partition. I then
installed Windows XP Home onto that partition and when I ran the Vista
program, the Upgrade option was disabled. I tried doing a clean install but
the partition wasn't listed.

Any ideas on why Upgrade wasn't available and why the partition wasn't listed?

I don't know Acronis Disk Director but for sure you can't install Vista and
XP in the same partition. Perhaps I misunderstood you. Colin

Auutumn, I never used your partition utility before, nor I ever tried a
XP/Vista dual boot, however, I like challenges.

In my case I have 3 disks with 2 dedicated to Windows and the other to
Mandriva Linux.

Since I personally do not believe in upgrades, I tried build 5600 with a
clean install, it was a little sloppy and slow, 2 days after the installation
build 5728 was available.

I decided to erase the entire first disk and make a different partition
giving more space to the first one, what I discovered, there was no partition
utilities included with the builds, then I took my XP disk, made the
partitions and tried again.

To make the long story short, Windows Vista present builds cannot "find"
partitions to make an install, unless they are formatted with NTFS mode. So,
at least in my case, if the first disk was not NTFS it went blank.

I initially tried to install Vista on a brand new formatted partition but
Vista never showed the partition. I also created a partition using Vista's
tool but there was a msg that says basically "PCs hardware may not support
booting to this disk. Ensure that the disks controller is enabled in the
BIOS." I have verified that my Drive C is working properly so I'm not sure if
there's anything else I can do in the BIOS.

Any other info you require or do you have any ideas?

I tried installing Vista on a clean 40GB NTFS partition but when I get to the
Partition Selection page, I see the msg "Your PCs hardware may not support
booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the
BIOS." When I click on the Next button, I see the msg "Windows is unable to
find a system volume." I've formatted the partition so I'm not sure what else
to do.

I also used Vista's tool to create a partition but I got the same set of
messages as above.

Any thoughts?

Is your hard disk running off from a SCSI adapter?
And was your BIOS setting correct?

Why don't you delete the partiton and try to install to the unallocated
space. I know there have been problems reported before using Acronis. They
are going to have them fixed by RTM. Don't know if it has anything to do
with the new version of NTFS Vista is using or not. You can create a
partition and reformat during the install.

I've tried your suggestion plus some variations on a theme and no good. Even
when I use Vista's tool to create a new partition, I still see the message
"Your PCs hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the
disk's controller is enabled in the BIOS." When I click on the Next button, I
see the msg "Windows is unable to find a system volume."

I've tried talking to Acronis but they're unresponsive. Do you have any
other suggestions?

I get the same message. Tried Raid0 and just one HD with no luck. I've
tried everything. Don't know what else to do

This is most perplexing, I wish I knew what the issue is. I'm thinking of
getting Acronis True Image to back up everything, try to install Vista on my
primary partition and see what happens then restore my original image should
the need arise. I'm also wondering if the issue has anything to do with
either Acronis Disk Director Suite or my Raid 0 configuration?
