Trying to apply Updates to W2K, but when I am prompted to put the original
installation CD into the drive to continue the process, I get stuck because
nowhere on the CD or on the hard drive is anything named DATA1.MSI.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a Microsoft Office issue. Is that what you are trying to update? Try putting in the Microsoft Office CD-ROM when you see this message.

George, you are right, this is an Office 2000 issue. I inadvertantly posted
this to the wrong group. I apologize to the group.

However, I do put the CD-ROM in the drive and it the file does not exist on
the CD-ROM. I was trying to update the Office 2000 Pro to the most recent
Office Update.

tks

Well it is not right at the root of the CD I don't think so. Couple things. If this was a Network install then you may have Network troubles or it no longer exists in the Network location. If not then in the registry the location of where Microsoft Office was installed from may be different then your curret configuration. Likely the CD-ROM drive letter that you have now is not what is in the registry. That's about the only other explanation.

My guess is that this machine is imaged by a corporate IT Department?
It looks like they have installed the Office update using a custom msi
file, and then created the image. Am I correct? I've seen this a few
times. Unless you can get the custom msi file, I don't think that you
can upgrade. Incidentally a lot of corporates tend to stick at Office
SR1a because of perceived problems with SP2. I can't say that I've
noticed any.

Altenatively, get the Office SR1a. This may contain the msi your
require, though my recollection (which could be wrong) is that the msi
file in that was called differently.

Cheers,

Cliff

In order to update to the newest version of ofc2K, you
will have to install sp1a, which can be downloaded from M$
(for free!). This is an internet install. After that you
can use the normal ofc update.

As for the location of the data1.msi, my experience is
that the installer acts very funny: You have the CD with
data1.msi at the root, but installer cannot find it
(sometimes, maybe you have two CD drives and installed ofc
from one and is now trying to update with the CD on the
other), you will need to browse to the cd drive and select
the file manually for it to recognise the file existence.

Hope this helps.

To George, Andy and Cliff,

Thanks for your assistance. Turns out I did have the wrong CD-ROM and found
the right one.
