I have a laptop which was purchased by an employee (who
has left the company on bad terms). He password protected
the logon to Windows 2000 Professional. Tried starting in
safe mode and doing administrator as the user name. How
can I override this and get into this laptop? HELP!!

Good luck. I've spent all day trying to do the same just
because I change the computer network setting from domain
to workgroup. There are several suggestions NONE of which
are easy or quick. If you find a way let me know @

Windows 2000 is password protected by default. I suggest you get someone in
the IT department of your company to login as domain adminsitrator and
create a login account for you. Even better, get them to format and
reinstall Windows. This is usually the best thing to do on a computer that
was used by someone else.

Q321305 How to Log On to Windows XP If You Forget Your
Password
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;Q321305

http://securityadmin.info/faq.htm#password

Reboot to Safe Mode, select Administrator, leave password
blank.
Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel and
delete/change the
password.

You do not need to reinstall if you forgot the admin or
any other password.

There is a boot disk you can download at:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html

that will let you reset the password of any account on
NT4, Windows2000 or
XP.

Just follow all the default settings which are for the
admin account.

For an Win2k AD domain controller, you need to do more
than that:

Although I would agree with the previous post, it's best
to just format and reinstall the OS under this type of
situation

You do not need to reinstall if you forgot the admin or
any other password.

My suggestion to reinstall is not because of the password issue, but
because it is better for the user to receive a "clean" pc rather than one
that contains data, programs, as well as misconfigurations that have no
value to the new user.
